I have been a Toastmaster for the past 13 years. At the outset I began my toastmaster journey to acquire speaking experience so that I could speak to church women groups. Another early goal was "to speak as well as I play the piano".
As further exposure to the toastmaster program came my way, I began to pursue the leadership track, serving as an Area Governor and then as Capitol Division Governor. When an opportunity presented itself to become District trio member, I eagerly embraced the opportunity.
My year as Lt. Governor of Education & Training was a wonderful experience meeting many great Toastmasters in District 7 and in Region 1. I learned much about myself, other people and organizational skills as I planned district functions. Along the way many people encouraged and assisted me.
The year I served as District Governor was another great journey. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the year. The administrative aspect of the job is extensive and provided a wide assortment of experiences.
I am a firm believer in the "process" of the Toastmaster program. The program is effective when the manuals are worked in the Communication & Leadership tracks. In my own journey I have experienced significant change as a result of this program. On a regular basis I see evidence of the "process" working in the lives of fellow Toasties who work the program and "put their whole self in".
I really do have another life beyond Toastmasters! I am married to the "first dude", Le, my hubby for 40 years. WOW! We enjoy life in the country outside the charming small town of Silverton. My 92-year-old dad also lives in Silverton and is a regular part of our life and family gatherings. Two sons, a daughter-in-law and grandchildren round out our immediate family.
Toastmasters has given me a love of speaking and training that has led to the development of a speaking/training business called Ok to Awesome. One of the trainings titled 'The Power of Engagement' teaches face-to-face communication skills. In a world that increasingly communicates via electronic means, this skill is being neglected. It is a critical leadership and business skill. The trainings are taught by myself and Le, presenting together. Additional information is available on our website: http://www.OktoAwesome.com
