Have a great Thanksgiving Holiday!

By Adele Edwards, DTM
District Governor

Fellow Toastmasters, I am thankful for many things this holiday season. I am thankful for my family and friends who love and nurture me. I am thankful for my health. I am especially thankful for my wonderful Toastmaster family - YOU!

I had a great time with all of you at the District Conference in Vancouver November 1-2! The Appleman Matt Shively, wife Cyndi and the conference committee really put on a great show. The Friday night "Broadway Show" was spectacular with some of our own Toastmaster members strutting their stuff!

Saturday was full of educational sessions, the Table Topics Contest (won by Jeff Evers with Daniel Russell placing second), awards for Toastmaster accomplishments and visiting with friends. Even the business meeting was entertaining! The Humorous Speech contest Saturday night had everyone laughing. Fred Dickey walked away with first place and Craig Saldanha placed second.

The Conference was definitely a highlight so far this year, but we have many things happening around District 7! Our clubs are busy working on their educational awards, turning in a record 46 CTMs in October! Don't forget to submit your Club Information and Officer Report to Toastmasters International by December 31! This report needs to be submitted even if you elect officers once a year.

The next District meeting will be December 14 at the Frog Pond Church in Wilsonville, OR at 9:00 am. We have Toastmaster Leadership Institute on January 25th at Marylhurst University in Lake Oswego, OR. Join us for officer's training and fun for ALL club members! More information about both of these meetings will be on the website and flyers will be mailed out to all club presidents.

What are you thankful for? Have a safe and enjoyable holiday!

A Look Back…A Look Ahead

By Allan Edinger, DTM
Lt Governor Education

Let's take a quick look to the past before looking forward. Our Toastmasters Leadership Institute was a great success and was just the beginning of an awesome officer training push. In the end, 103 clubs (out of 151) trained four officers or more. We have had several District Meetings and just completed an awesome Fall Conference in Vancouver. The response to the CTM October Contest was incredible - to date 46 CTM's have been submitted and I suspect a few stragglers will follow.

We now look forward as we approach the half-way point of the Toastmaster year. Another TLI is scheduled for January. Included will be a session on how to get the boredom out of training. We also need to focus on those 48 clubs that did not receive training the first time and at the same time get those first 103 clubs their qualification for their DCP training goal.

The Spring Conference Committee in Corvallis has been meeting regularly and we look forward to finalizing plans for that event. In addition, we will be on a proxy hunt to get as many votes possible for voting at the Regional and International Conventions.

We must continue to focus on member retention and make sure club dues are paid. We must continue to support Bernie Lunsford in her attempts to build new clubs.

Of course our members continue to grow by completing their CTM'S and ATM's as well as assist in meeting the club goals for the DCP program. I encourage everyone to follow the District 7 theme "Together We Soar!" as we all continue to lead, communicate and grow.

New Club Update

By Bernie Lunsford, DTM
Lt. Governor of Marketing

I have some good news and some bad news fellow Toastmasters. I'll give you the bad news first: we just lost another club, that's four down. We also have some clubs that are low membership that desperately need some more members. If you know of people that live in Gresham invite them to join the Thursday noontime club that meets at the Gresham City Hall. Oregon Trail Toastmasters that meets at Good Samaritan Hospital in NW Portland at 6:45 Wednesday mornings also is very much in need of members. We don't want to lose two more clubs, so let's see what we can do to help these clubs.

The good news is we have six new clubs so we are still ahead of the game although we still have along way to go to meet our goal of 12 new clubs. We do have some that are close to chartering - the Tigard club just needs 1 more to charter, the Pearl District club needs 4 more to charter. Great job to Carole Petranek & Wayne Potter. Also, we have more new club demo meetings coming up and a club should charter in Salem this month.

We need to keep the momentum going so keep those new club leads coming in.

Hope to see you all at the District meeting in December.

Fall Conference Soars in Vancouver (November 1-2, 2002)

By Ruth Delker, DTM

We soared through the fall conference in the lovely Inn at the Quay in Vancouver, Washington, Friday & Saturday, November 1-2, 2002. District 7 Friday night and Saturday activities demonstrated how our district does business while having fun.

Mr. Appleman and his assistants coordinated an excellent sequence of events. The Friday night entertainment included "The Big Apple Broadway Show" featuring Bruce Rottink as the emcee and much entertainment, including arias by Peter Kraus, Steve Crockford's humorous speech contest winning speech from 10+ years ago, the Joy Dance Troupe, songs from Dorothy Cottingham, Robin Dodd and Matt Shively doing Abbott and Costello's "Who's on First", Carissa Brink doing a western monologue, and some folks who showed us how to play music on garbage cans and other stuff around the house.

Our conference committee excelled at their commitment to shine our apples. The committee covered all the items critical to a successful conference from registration to timely contests - everything was done first class!

Dorothy Cottingham, DTM, PID began Saturday's events with her keynote address "Bring out the Best in Yourself". She noted that at whatever our level, we all have the opportunity to share our theme - together we soar - to be the best we can be. She even dared the audience to take off their watches and trust the conference helpers to lead us through the day. Quite a hard thing to do for some!

Next we focused on our district's soaring educational opportunities. Adele, Allan, and Bernie moved us timely through all the planned events, while allowing attendees to network and socialize.

Our luncheon and awards ceremony noted the special achievements of the many toastmaster clubs and individuals who are following the Distinguished Club plan. New DTM awards honored Allan Edinger, JanMarie Dielschneider, and our newest DTM - Bernie Lunsford.

The contests were run in true efficient Toastmaster fashion. Our compliments go to Bob Tiegs, contest chair, and to Beryl Anderson, chief judge, for organizing these events.

At the business meeting our quorum was met. Our district will support our international candidate Gary Schmidt as he bids for that opportunity to further serve the Toastmaster community as International Director from Region I. Adele met with division and area governors and offered words of encouragement for their successes this year and reviewed the upcoming opportunities and challenges.

Throughout the day, Richard Guerrero snapped pictures of everything he could - these pictures can be viewed on our fall conference page. To view all pictures go to: http://homepage.mac.com/odintechnologies/Toastmasters/Menu11.html. See how many people you can recognize!

It's only six short months to our next get-together in the heart of the valley - Corvallis on April 11-12, 2003.

What Does a PRO do?

By Carole Petranek
Public Relations Officer

As Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the District, what do I do? I am here to support you and be a creative resource for your public relations needs. I have a list of all the newspapers in our district and will be happy to share any and all information that I have about spreading the word of Toastmasters to the general public.

Many clubs already do an outstanding job of publicizing the individual accomplishments of their club members. Daylighters has publicized their open house in the Valley Times. Wallmasters frequently has articles published in the Tigard Times about club contests.

With some clubs electing new officers, now would be a great time to have your VP of Public Relations send a press release to your local paper about the newly elected officers. If you have invited the area governor to attend and do the officer installation, you could publicize that also.

If you have pictures from your club, send them to Colleen Wright, Webmaster, d7toastmasters.org (sheenalena@msn.com). She may have space to put them on the web page. Write a brief caption for her.

I'm here to help you in any way I can. Call me at (503) 590-9860 or my e-mail address is petranekc@aol.com.
