Timberlines NewsletterJuly 2002We Reached for-and Grabbed-the Stars!by Gary Schmidt "A man's reach should exceed his grasp, otherwise what's a heaven for?" said Robert Browning. That quote inspired our 2001-2002 District theme, "Reach for the Stars!" Indeed, you all reached for your personal and club stars-and you grabbed them! Thank you to everyone who worked so diligently and successfully to serve our clubs and members this past Toastmasters year! We achieved stellar accomplishments-a record number of Distinguished or better clubs, and a record number of Distinguished or better Areas and Divisions! Thank you to the 40 Area and Division Governors and 28 District Officers and Committee Chairs who donated their time and talents to make our district a success! Here is how our District finished the year:

EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION & TRAINING AWARDAdele Edwards, DTM It was an honor to serve as your District Governor. We have a wonderful year ahead under the superb leadership of District Governor Adele Edwards. Continue to reach for your own stars, as Together We Soar to higher accomplishments and greater successes! Together We Soarby Adele Edwards, DTM "No matter what accomplishments you achieve, somebody helps you." - Althea Gibson Fellow Toastmasters, A black female tennis player in the 1950s, Althea Gibson achieved many of her goals. She won the French Open in 1956, Wimbledon and the US Open in 1957 and 1958. She attributes her great success to the people who helped her along her career. As Toastmasters, we help each other to be successful. We join a club, usually because someone encourages us to join. We work on our speeches, sometimes with another club member or mentor. We present our speeches to our club in a safe, caring environment and receive an evaluation from our peers designed to help us improve. Because I have experienced this myself and believe it wholeheartedly, I have selected as our theme this year, “Together We Soar.” I truly believe that together we can accomplish anything! It is hard to believe that our new Toastmaster year just started July 1. Many District 7 Toastmasters have been busy and have already achieved success with two clubs being chartered in July! Welcome to Tough Talkers Toastmasters, the club formed by Columbia Sportswear. Mentors helping this club to be successful are Carole Petranek and Dave Hiller. Another new club in the Portland Area is Speakers by Design, a company club for Industrial Design Corp. Toastmasters helping that club include Cleon Cox, Carole Petranek and Bernie Lunsford. Congratulations to Immediate Past District Governor and this year’s Extension Chair, Gary Schmidt, for chartering these clubs. Other things happening in the district included our District meeting on July 20 where we heard presentations from most of the district committee chairs about how they will serve the clubs and members. Area and Division Governors are planning Officer Training sessions - check out the list of training dates in this edition of the Timberlines! Southern Division is holding their Toastmaster Leadership Institute on July 27. Lots of things happening to help clubs and members be successful and attain their goals! What is your goal? Let your club members know. Talk with the district team. We’re here to help YOU be successful! Together We Soar! Education and Training Reportby Allan Edinger, DTM As Lt. Governor of Education and Training, the new year has certainly started out with a bang. First, our Toastmaster Leadership Institute had over 160 participants, a new record. Many thanks go to not only those who attended but to the awesome presenters that we had. Second, we just completed out first District Meeting with the theme “Meet the Team”. Seventeen members of District Governor Edwards’ team presented manual speeches on their responsibilities as Committee Chairs. In August, the theme of our District Meeting will be “The Beryl and Bob Show”. This meeting will be oriented towards the humorous speech and table topics contests that are rapidly approaching. Want to be a participant? Want to be a judge? Want to learn how to run a contest? This is the place for you, the August 17th District 7 Meeting! On September 21st, the District Meeting will be “President’s Premier”, another fun-filled, educational meeting. Plan to get your club presidents to this meeting. This is the time of the year when we hit training of club officers especially hard. We have until the end of August to complete this task. If you need help, do not wait until the last minute. Call if you need help and make sure you get the names of those trained to me. My goal is to get at least 59% of all clubs trained with four officers or more. We are always open to suggestions for speakers at our District Meetings and conferences. If you would like to speak, or hear someone give an especially good presentation, please let me know. We are always looking for a lot of good speakers. How can I Start a New Club?by Bernie Lunsford, ATM-G It's easy!!!All you have to do is give me a contact name. I will do the rest. I will contact that person, and let them know that all they need to do set up a time and place, & invite people to that meeting. I will furnish them with all the information they need. I will bring in a fantastic team of experienced Toastmasters to put on a demonstration meeting, Then once we get that new club up and going we will train their officers & I will assign that club a mentor to attend there meeting's for the first six months to help them with any questions they have. You might be asking yourself, “What do I get out of this?” The person that turns in that club lead will get credit for sponsoring a new club. How easy!!! So what are you waiting for? E-mail me those new leads now to bernie.lunsford@ocsblount.com. Looking forward to hearing from you. I want to continue in the footsteps of past editors to make it a great newsletter and a source of information for all Toastmasters in District 7. In my stint as editor, here is what I would like to do:
Toastmasters is the LEADING communication and leadership training program of the world. Part of communication is the written word and passing on information through this newsletter. Please help by reading, disseminating, distributing, sharing, and giving out this newsletter to your members. The best information and ideas are worthless if no one reads them. You all know about the age-old question, "If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear, does it make a sound?" I have another question for you to ponder: "If that tree is converted into paper, developed into a newsletter through many computer keystrokes, but no one reads it, have the ideas been communicated?" Help us in the District by doing your part to share this with your club members and guests as we soar together in this Toastmasters year. If you have anything you would like to see or have a comment on anything in the newsletter, I can be reached at wrrdtm@mindspring.com or 360-666-6814. Upcoming Officer TrainingIf you missed the Toastmaster Leadership Institute in June, there are a few more training opportunities coming up in the next few weeks.
